James is a corporate, commercial and real estate lawyer with a practice focus on non-profits and Indigenous land matters. In August 2020, he founded macushlaw– one of the first benefit company law firms in BC.

James is passionate about small firm and solo practice, access to justice, and community contribution. While tending to a busy case load at macushlaw, he founded 253 Columbia– a small lawyer-focussed co-working space in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood. He also co-founded a growing online community of small firm and solo practitioners called BCSOS. Still, James happily finds time to provide “low bono” and pro bono legal services.

When he’s not working (!), he’s either off-roading in the West Kootenay woods with his partner Raquel and their elderly chihuahua Tequila, playing board games, or strumming a familiar tune at a local open mic.
